Textile
engineering is a branch of engineering that deals with textile technology,
production, processes, equipment and merchandising. In this article, you will
be reading about textile engineering courses available in India.
Textile
Engineering
Textile
engineering is a discipline of engineering that focuses on various stages
involved in textile manufacturing. Right from the production and processing of
raw materials to printing and merchandising- all topics are covered by this
engineering branch.Various
chemical, mechanical and physical processes are involved throughout the textile
manufacturing process. Textile equipment, chemicals, fibres, polymers and other
synthetic materials are involved in it. Textile engineering deals with these
processes, synthetic materials, machinery and overall production. These days,
computers play a prominent role in textile industry. Computers are used to
design and manufacture (process control) textile products. This
branch also gives attention to the marketing, management and merchandising side
of textile industry. Research and Development is another integral part covered
by this branch.
In
short, textile engineering uses principles of engineering, chemistry, textile
processes and textile equipment in the process of textile
production/manufacturing. Thanks to this unique combination, textile production
has become more productive and optimized. To further boost this efficiency,
adequate attention is also given to the R&D sector associated with textile
engineering!
TEXTILE
ENGINEERING COURSES
In
India, undergraduate level textile engineering programs are available in two
formats-
- Diploma in Textile Engineering
- B.E./B.Tech. in Textile Engineering
1
DIPLOMA IN TEXTILE ENGINEERING
It
is a Diploma certificate program. It is also known by the name of Diploma in
Textile Technology or Diploma in Textile Processing.
Duration
Course duration is 3 years. Usually the academic program is divided into 6
semesters. Each semester lasts for a period of 6 months. Evaluation is done at
the end of each semester. The course consists of classroom lectures and
practical lab sessions. In the case of final academic year, project work will
also be involved.
Eligibility
criteria
10+2 passed in Science stream (with Physics, Chemistry and
Mathematics subjects) from a recognized board. Minimum marks criteria may exist
in case of many institutes (around 50% aggregate marks). Note: Some institutes
also give admission to 10th passed students.
Admission
process
Mode of admission depends on the institute. Some institutes follow
direct admission process. Many institutes follow merit based admission process.
Marks scored by a student in board exam and/or relevant entrance test is taken
into consideration, when it comes to merit based admission process.
Further
studies and PG courses
The best step ahead for Diploma holders is to go for
Bachelor’s Degree program in textile engineering. Using the lateral entry,
deserving Diploma holders may secure admission directly in the second academic
year of B.E./B.Tech. Textile Engineering program. After
completing Bachelor’s program, one may go for relevant Master’s courses
(M.Tech., MBA or M.Sc.), PG Diploma or skill developing PG Certificate or
training programs. For those who would like to pursue further advanced studies,
PhD program will be of use.
2
B.E./B.TECH. IN TEXTILE ENGINEERING
It
is a Bachelor of Engineering or Bachelor of Technology Degree program.
Duration: Course duration is 4 years. The
academic program is divided into 8 semesters. Each semester lasts for a period
of 6 months. Evaluation is done at the end of each semester. The course
consists of classroom lectures and practical lab sessions. Industrial visit and
training program is present in this course. In the case of final academic year,
project work will also be involved.
Eligibility
criteria
10+2 passed in Science stream (with Physics, Chemistry and
Mathematics subjects) from a recognized board. Minimum marks criteria may exist
in case of many institutes (around 50% aggregate marks).
Admission
process
Most institutes follow merit based admission process. Marks scored by
a student in board exam and relevant entrance test (JEE, Institute-wise,
State-wise etc) is taken into consideration, when it comes to merit based
admission process. Eligible candidates may also make use of donation quota or
NRI quota (depending on the institute’s setup) to secure admission.
Further
studies and PG courses
After completing Bachelor’s program, one may go for
relevant Master’s courses (M.Tech., MBA or M.Sc.), PG Diploma or skill developing
PG Certificate or training programs. For those who would like to pursue further
advanced studies, PhD program will be of use.
ALTERNATIVE COURSES
In
India, there exist few generalized textile related courses, which are good
alternatives to the above mentioned textile engineering programs. Some of the
well known alternative courses are-
- Bachelor of Design- Textile Design
- B.Sc. Textile Design
- B.Sc. Textile Technology
Though
the above mentioned programs are generalized ones, they do cover topics such as
textile processes, textile manufacturing and production. The above mentioned
courses focus more on design aspect of textile manufacturing.

SCOPE,
CAREER PROSPECTS AND JOB OPPORTUNITIES
When
it comes to the field of textile engineering, the private sector offers more
job opportunities than the Government sector. Talking about the Government
sector, Ministry of Textile is the prime recruiter.Jobs
offered by the Ministry of Textile includes lab based jobs, production based
jobs, quality control jobs, marketing and merchandising jobs etc.Besides
Ministry of Textile, State wise Textile Corporations are also known to recruit
textile engineering graduates to fill up the above mentioned job posts (based
on vacancy). To land Government sector job, one must crack the relevant
selection examination (UPSC or State-wise PSC exams).Coming
to the private sector, textile mills, raw material agencies, synthetic material
agencies, textile marketing and merchandising firms are known to recruit
textile engineering graduates.Some
of the well known job profiles available in front of textile engineers
includes-
- Quality Control Engineer
- Process Control Engineer
- Production Engineer
- CAD Specialist
- Marketing Professional
- Plant Supervisor
- Product Designer
- R&D Professional
Some
of the well known private sector recruiters are
- RIL Textiles
- JCT Mills
- Bombay Dyeing
- Fabindia
- Mafatlal Denim
- Raymond Group
- SALARY
Starting
salary depends on a number of different factors. Prominent factors are- profile
of the employer, employee skills, aptitude and grades attained by the employee.
General starting salary is around 15-30k Rupees per month. In case of
Government job, salary will be based on Pay Band and scale.
