RVCE is an autonomous college under VTU i.e. they have their own curriculum, exams and rules but the degree is awarded by VTU.

Location:

Located on Mysore Road, RV College of Engineering (RVCE) is quite far from the centre of the city and it takes about an hour to reach the college without traffic. However it’s easily accessible as a lot of BMTC buses ply here. College also provides bus facility for 15,000 a year. Almost equal numbers of students travel by BMTC and college bus.

Infrastructure:

The RV College of Engineering (RVCE) campus is huge and is also very beautiful. There is a separate block for each department. The academic infrastructure is top class. Labs are of course well-equipped and also have equipment which are not usually found in any other colleges of the city. The entire campus is Wifi enabled, which however isn't very reliable. Library is pretty big and has a lot of books. But it needs to enhance its collection as some of the books are not found in sufficient numbers. Also college needs to provide better facilities for sports. There are a couple of playgrounds (unlike many other engineering colleges in Bangalore, where there are absolutely no grounds or open space) but and they are not in a very good condition and students in general aren't too happy with this factor.

Hostels for 2nd and final year are new and they’re nice. The first years hostels are average. But the 3rd years hostels are old and in a pathetic condition. There are just 4 bathrooms between 64 students. Mess food is fine but offers no variety to students. Hostel charges are Rs 45,000 a year including mess charges.

Faculty:

Some of the faculty at RV College of Engineering (RCVE) are pretty amazing, but they are few. Half of the faculty members are freshers who don’t have much of an experience. Communication in class is in English and sometimes in Kannada as well. So outsiders might face problems understanding what they teach. Quite a few teachers are also said to be partial to local students. Overall the faculty here are not the kind that one expects to be at one of the top colleges in city.

Crowd:

50% students are from various parts of Karnataka while the rest 50% are from all parts of the country. A lot of nerdy type of crowd is to be expected over here. As a fresher one may face some problems initially in getting along, especially those who are not from Bangalore, but after a sem or 2 they’ll make it fine.

Hangouts:

Not the best hangouts surround RVCE but there’s one Gopalan Mall which is a decent place to kill time. There are also a few good place in Rajarajeshwari Nagar else you can always go to places like MG Road, Koramangala or Malleshwaram in the central region to find some better options.

Canteen:

There are 2 canteens but no variety is available in either. Only the south Indian food tastes good; north Indian food also tastes like south Indian most of the times. Sitting space is also not enough for the strength of students. Good part is that it’s very reasonably priced.

Festivals:

A lot of festivals happen here but ‘8th Mile’ is the biggest among all of them. Although it's not on as large scale as some of the more popular festivals in the city arranged by colleges which are in the league of RVCE, it’s not bad either. It’s an annual inter-college techno-cultural fest held in March.

Placements:

It’s the best part of this college. More than 100% placement for all branches is guaranteed. More IT companies than the core ones visit the campus, so CS, IS and ECE branches gets more salaries which is 4.5 – 5 lakh on an average. IBM, Wipro & Accenture are the major recruiters for these branches. Big MNCs like Microsoft & Texas Instruments also took a few students offering an amazing package of 10 to 12 Lakhs. Mechanical, Civil, IM and other branches gets average 3.5 lakh package and their major recruiters are Bosch & L&T.

The main boys’ hostels are across the road while girls’ hostel is inside the campus. There is also one international co-ed hostel which has got better facilities. A boys hostel can be found in the campus of international hostel. All the rooms are available on twin sharing basis. Charges for hostels outside the campus and inside the campus are Rs 77,000 & Rs ~60,000 per year respectively. Mess food is also not bad but it’s monotonous and one can’t have it all the year. Mess charges are Rs 37,000 per year.

Faculty:

Faculties at BMS are one of the best in the field. They’re highly experienced and well-qualified too. But the problem with some teachers is that they seem to be somewhat reluctant to teach and act lethargic in class. Also many are very good at theory but have little or no exposure to industry and aren’t interested in promoting research work. Mechanical has got very strict staff while EC, CS & IS faculties are pretty chilled out.

Crowd:

BMS has one of the best crowds in the city. In the words of a student, it’s “hip & happening, party type of crowd”. Students here are great in academics without being nerdy and they also participate in all extra activities too. About half the students are locals while the rest are hostel’ites and they’re from all parts of the country.

Hangouts:

There are lots of good places just around the corner and those have more time can go to MG Road or Jayanagar which also aren't too far.

Canteen:

There are many options to have food in the college – a canteen, a hostel mess, Coffee Day express, Nescafe, Nandini and Kamat’s. All of them serve tasty food and there’s good variety too.

Festivals:

'Utsav' is an annual techno-cultural festival held in April. It is considered a big thing in Bangalore and a lot of engineering and non-engineering colleges participate in it. Apart from this other festivals that are arranged by various department and committees are also on a large scale.

Placements:

BMSCE has amazing placement records. Almost 100% students secure good jobs. Observing the importance that ‘design’ could bring to pedagogy and the integration of mainstream disciplines in engineering and the arts, PES University has decided to set-up a Design School. PESU Design School aims to be the best and the first-batch commences from August 2016 within the undergraduate and post-graduate programs. The UG program offers a four-year Bachelor of Design (B.Des) degree in three streams, Product Design, Interaction Design and Communication Design. The first-year is common to all the three streams. The PG program currently offers a two-year professional Masters of Design (M.Des) degree in Product Design. These degrees are equivalent to the B.Tech/BE and M.Tech/ME degrees offered in the mainstream. The Design School has a growing team of distinguished faculty members who bring in a wealth of professional experience in addition to having graduated from premier institutes (IISc/IITs).

WHY CHOOSE TO PURSUE A B.DES / M.DES DEGREE?

Despite being a preferred service destination, India also has a strong manufacturing base that is being promoted very well through the ‘Make in India’ campaign. Experts believe that it is a matter of time before ‘Make in India’, foremost means ‘Designed in India’. The design degrees on offer prepare students with the skills to design tangible and intangible products and making these within India would mean contributing to the national cause.

If you appreciate the arts and crafts, tried your hand at them, did well and are mulling about why these skills may not be integral to mainstream career options, then pursuing a design degree could be that first-step forward for you. The recent smart initiatives that the government is promoting also increase the need for Interaction Design and Communication design.

ABOUT THE THREE DESIGN STREAMS

PRODUCT DESIGN:

Products are inseparable manifestations of art, science and engineering, ideally without an argument of primacy among them. Product Design is the iterative creative process of specifying products that meet human needs responsibly. Aligned to the vision (hyperlink to PESU Vision) and mission (hyperlink to PESU Mission) of PESU, the objective of the Product Design stream is to facilitate the development of skills in students that will enable them to solve/resolve problems facing humanity through product interventions. As the definition of product can be broad, the program also is broad-based and allows students to choose an area/sector/segment to work on which they prefer to pursue in the later years of their degree and pursuing a career.

INTERACTION DESIGN:

The Interaction Design stream will focus on designing interactions and not just interfaces. Again, interactions will look beyond the immediacy and seen within a larger societal context. Select courses in these specializations include User Experience, Usability Evaluation, Interaction Technologies and Media. Apart from the main courses, students will have electives (credit and non-credit courses), which will strengthen their abilities as an Interaction Designer.

COMMUNICATION DESIGN:

Communication Design is a mixed discipline between design and information-development. Here we look at how media such as printed, crafted, electronic media or presentations communicate with people. The focus is also to create new media channels to ensure the message reaches the target audience. Some select courses within Communication Design would be Typography, Design, Storytelling and Narratives, Visual perception and Semiotics. Just like the other two streams, elective courses will be available for students specializing in Communication Design to strengthen their skills.

WHILE WORKING INDIVIDUALLY IS ENCOURAGED, THE STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO WORK COLLABORATIVELY IN TEAMS WITH STUDENTS FROM OTHER DESIGN STREAMS AND ENGINEERING DISCIPLINES AT PESU, THEREBY LEVERAGING THE STRENGTHS OF A DIVERSE AND ENTREPRENEURIAL PESU CULTURE. IT IS EXPECTED THAT STUDENTS IN DESIGN ALSO LEAD SUCH COLLABORATIVE INITIATIVES CULMINATING IN STARTING UP THEIR OWN PRACTICE AND BECOMING ENTREPRENEURS. HOWEVER, STUDENTS COULD ALSO CHOOSE TO BE EMPLOYED IN THE ORGANIZATIONS THAT PES U CONSISTENTLY ATTRACTS FROM PLACEMENTS.

OPPORTUNITIES ON GRADUATING WITH B.DES/M.DES DEGREE?

On graduating from the product design stream, the roles that may be offered in the industry could be Industrial Designer, Design Engineer, Design Manager, Product Designer etc.. These offers typically depend on the individual’s performance (generally evaluated over a portfolio of alongside other considerations that the industry may set) and work experience. While the B.Des students generally get into entry-level roles, M.Des students could get placed at the next level.

The typical industry roles for Interaction Design and Communication Design graduates are UI, UX designer, Interaction designer, Graphic Designer etc. A trend which works to the advantage for Interaction and Communication Designers is that more companies now believe that using these designers early in the product/service development process can change the course of conversations and add considerable value.

ADMISSIONS & ELIGIBILITY

ADMISSION THROUGH PESSAT

1. Apply for B.Des at PES University by registering for PESSAT – Register now

2. The candidate can take PESSAT test conducted at PES University campus, Bangalore OR if the candidate has a UCEED score, then they can upload the same along with their 10+2 or Diploma scores by visiting our website www.pes.edu before 30th June 2016 (either PESSAT or UCEEED is mandatory for admission to B.Des at PES University. The link to upload UCEED scores will be updated at a later stage on our website and intimated through mail and SMS to all registered students)

3. If the candidate is seeking admission through UCEED score, then he/she will be called for an interview by the Department of Architecture at PES University. Once the candidate clears the interview, he/she will be admitted to the University.

4. If the candidate is seeking admission through PESSAT score, then he/she will have to attend the Design Aptitude Test (DAT) conducted by the Department of Architecture at PES University following which an interview will be conducted. Once the candidate clears both, he/she will be admitted to the University.

5. Top 5% of the students (based on merit) selected will be eligible for PESSAT merit category “A” seats wherein the annual fee will be same as the CET fee. Rest of the students will be under PESSAT merit category “B” seats.

Candidates must have passed 10+2 with a minimum of 50% marks in aggregate in Arts, Science, Commerce or any other relevant stream and should have studied English as a mandatory course

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The B. Arch degree at PESU, FOA satisfies the Council of Architecture’s requirements. The curriculum aims to integrate both academic and professional values and standards specific to the profession of Architecture. The curriculum includes two stages of studies. The first stage of six semesters . The second stage of four semesters. In the 8th semester, Architectural Design project is undertaken. In the 5th Year the students are expected to undergo professional training in an architectural office. The B. Arch program at PESU has a growing team of distinguished faculty members who bring in a wealth of professional experience in addition to having graduated from premier institutes. The architectural faculty consists of full time and visiting faculty. Faculty from allied disciplines of art, humanities, civil engineering and mechanical engineering are also in the team. Thrust will be on amalgamation of academic theories and practical knowledge of industry by the faculty and research.

OPPORTUNITIES ON GRADUATING WITH B.DES/M.DES DEGREE?

Architecture graduates will find employment in established architecture firms. They will usually start by assisting more experienced architects before managing projects on their own. After they have gained experience the graduates may start their independent practice, they may pursue higher education, they may involve themselves in Academic fields and research. Apart from the above, graduates may pursue in interior and spatial design fields as well as website design, or perhaps other roles within the community and local environment, like town-planning, landscape architecture or even sustainable areas may be taken up.

If one has the flair to write about architecture and design, cover events for magazines and websites, related to this domain they can specialize in Architectural Journalism. 2. NO PESSAT TEST conducted for B.Arch applicants. Admissions are through the NATA score and marks obtained in 10+2 or Diploma.

3. The registered candidates need to upload their NATA scores and their 10+2 or Diploma scores by visiting our website before 30th June 2016 (The link to upload NATA scores will be updated at a later stage on our website and intimated through mail and SMS to all registered students)

4. First round of Counseling cum admission will be conducted at PES University tentatively in the first week of June for the students based on the NATA scores along with 10+2 and Diploma scores that have been uploaded on our website

5. Top 5% of the students (based on the NATA, 10+2 or diploma scores) selected through the counseling will be eligible for PESSAT merit category “A” seats wherein the annual fee will be same as the CET fee. Rest of the students will be put under PESSAT merit category “B” seats.

ADMISSION THROUGH CET (FOR THE 40% OF SEATS):

1. The candidates can apply for CET and attend the counseling at CET cell

2. The candidates selected for PES University through CET will have to approach PES University with the admission order issued at the CET cell

3. Admission will be done at PES University

Candidates must have passed 10+2 with a minimum of 50% marks in aggregate and should have studied mathematics as a mandatory course
