PES University (PESU) is a private university in Bengaluru,
India. Established in 1972, it is focused on four main educational areas:
Engineering, Medicine, Management and Life Sciences. The institutions offer
both foundation courses in these areas, as well as specialization with a
Bachelors/ Master/ PhD degree. Originally named the PES Institute of Technology
(PESIT), it was renamed in 2013.
Admission criteria
PESU admits 40% of its students to undergraduate courses
based on their Karnataka CET and 60% seats based on PESSAT (the university's
own entrance test) ranks. PESU also admits students under Management
quota,which does not place any merit requirements.There is a lateral entry
scheme in place, by which students holding diploma degrees can directly enter
the second year of study in engineering. On graduating students receive a
Bachelor of Engineering degree.
Students are admitted to postgraduate courses based on their
GATE test scores as well as on their Post Graduate Karnataka CET scores. Upon
graduating, they receive aMaster of Technology degree. The online registrations
for PESSAT 2016 has commenced.

Faculty and research
Crucible Of Research and Innovation (CORI) is a
multi-disciplinary research centre at PESU. It was inaugurated by C.N.R Rao
former Director, Indian Institute of Science on February 7, 2010. It has
research facilities and a set of dedicated research staff who carry out
research in their areas of interest.
BIOTECHNOLOGY
Biotechnology is the culmination of Life Sciences and
Engineering resulting in technologies. These are exciting times for
Biotechnology as it is considered the area that can solve sustainability issues
for the human mankind. One can look for alternative renewable energy sources or
mitigate climate change or produce medicines or discover new drugs or treatment
technologies for health or tackle the requirements of meeting the hunger of
billions of people or treat water and waste water or occupational health, etc.,
the answer lies in Biotechnology.
The Bachelors program in Biotechnology at PES University is a
four year undergraduate degree course covering the span of Bioprocess
Engineering, Cell and Molecular Biotechnology, Bioinformatics and Computational
Biology and Medical and Environmental Biotechnology to address the sustainable
issues which the human mankind has never dealt before.
The Bachelors of Engineering (B.E) in Biotechnology involves
the application of engineering principles to biology and is more of an applied
approach to Life Sciences laying the foundation by studying both hands on as
well as formal teaching in basics of Biotechnology. It differs from the BSc and
MSc Biotechnology which focuses more on the basic sciences and no focus on
engineering aspects of biology. A student entering into the B.E Biotechnology
program is introduced to subjects related to Biology such as Microbiology, Cell
Biology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, in addition to engineering courses
such as Bioprocess Calculations, Fluid Mechanics, Heat and Mass Transfer,
Bioprocess Reaction Engineering and also Bioinformatics.
As the student approaches the intermediate level he or she
would gear towards one of the specialized areas. Further, the student is
trained hands on experience in the laboratories so as to gain knowledge of both
the wet lab as well as dry lab. The program offers a choice of core courses in
Biotechnology apart from a host of elective subjects in the respective domains.
As part of the curriculum a student of Biotechnology is expected to complete a
project of interest in their respective specialized area as a partial
fulfilment of the B.E Biotechnology program. This gives the student an
opportunity to excel either independently or as part of a team in conduction and
execution of the project.
CIVIL
Civil Engineering as known is the oldest branch of
engineering which comprises of all activities fulfilling the basic needs of the
human beings. It aims at providing food, water, shelter, power and
transportation. Civil engineering problems involve physical, mathematical,
life, earth, social, communication and engineering sciences. It involves many
other professional areas including architecture, planning, law, public health,
economics, management, sociology, finance and other branches of engineering.
Department of Civil Engineering at PESIT was established in
the year 2012 with an object to create world class civil engineering department
with state of art facilities to excel in academics and research activities.
The department aims to create professionally superior and
ethically strong students. To achieve this, the curriculum is developed in line
with the current trends in civil engineering industry and research. Some
examples are advanced CAD labs, 3D modeling using Sketchup, Revit Architecture,
etc. Also the department has highly qualified faculty members from academics
and industry with vast research experience working on cutting edge technology.
The faculty has published technical papers addressing the current scenario, in
leading journals and conferences.
The department is equipped with state of the art
infrastructure like class rooms with modern teaching aids, laboratories that
include 100 Tons strain controlled Universal Testing Machine, Total Stations
etc and a library having adequate number of books on different fields of civil
engineering. Students and faculty also have on-line access to most of the
international journals.
The students and faculty are encouraged to attend and publish
in conferences, workshops and seminars, take part in competitions related to
civil engineering, set up various chapter/clubs to carry out
research/activities of their interest, like IGBC, ICI, Saṃniveśa etc. Student
Academic Support Program is conducted after the class hours for the benefit of
slow learning students in all the subjects. Guest lectures, invited lectures
from the academic and industry experts are arranged to keep the students and
faculty informed of the latest developments and industry challenges. The
department would also like to organize national and international conferences,
seminars and symposia in future.
The department plans to offer M.Tech and Ph.D programs, setup
centers of excellence in structural engineering, advanced materials,
geotechnical and transportation engineering, take up consultancy involving
planning and design of real life projects and offer specific training to
students and industry, on a timely and need basis.
In all, the department aims to offer the best environment for
under graduate engineering students to pursue academic studies,
research/activities in the field of their interest.
The Department of Civil Engineering at PESIT is one of the
new department of the institution with an annual intake of 120 students. The
Department currently has total faculty strength of 13 inclusive of 2
Professors, 1 Associate Professor and 7 Assistant Professors and 3 Visiting
Professors.
COMPUTER SCIENCE
The B.E. in Computer Science and Engineering programme is
designed to create globally competent manpower for the information and
communication technology (ICT) industry. At the same time, it is also designed
to prepare the student for post graduate education in the best universities
across the globe. These twin objectives are accomplished by including an
optimal mix of fundamental theory subjects and practical, current and industry
relevant subjects in the scheme of study.
Other courses such as database management systems, for
instance, provide the student a good mix of theoretical and practical aspects
of the particular technology. Such courses have theory and laboratory
components that are well integrated throughout the semester. In addition,
students choose from a wide array of elective courses in higher semesters to
further their competence in their chosen area of specialization such as
advanced computer architecture, computer networking, mobile communication,
sensor networks and artificial intelligence.
These courses are revised frequently and include current
topics such as Web 2.0, data analytics, cloud computing, mobile systems
engineering, Web technologies and so on. In addition to the regular curriculum,
the students get an opportunity to work as teaching and research assistants
under the faculty members who are constantly involved in sponsored research and
consulting projects. The scheme also encourages and provides students
opportunities to obtain summer internships in reputed companies to make them
industry ready.

Electrical and electronic engineering is revolutionizing

electronics, modern control systems, electrical energy management and advanced
communications. They are replacing our aging and inefficient power distribution

civilization. Energy processing equipment or power electronic equipment is a

Power electronics technology has seen rapid progress in the

MECHANICAL
Department of Mechanical Engineering at PESIT was established
in the year 1988. The department has an aggressive academic rigor in the
autonomous program with a high quality curriculum.
The Department of Mechanaical Engineering offers Master’s
degree in Automotive Engineering under Visvesvaraya Technological University.
The department has highly qualified experts from both the academia and the
industry with vast research and engineering experience. This helps offer high
end courses, work on cutting edge technologies along with a curriculum that
would help the students get ready for their professional career, be it the
industry or academics.
The department is also setting up a research centre dedicated
to automotive and aerospace researchand engineering now under the domain CARE
(Center for Automobile Research and Engineering) and well facilitated computer
labs with the most latest of hardware and software in line with industry
requirements. The department has collaborative research relationships with many
internationally reputed companies such as General Motors, Mann Hummel, Triveni,
EKO, GE to name a few. The department is now expanding especially in the
automotive domain to work on cutting edge research and technologies of electric
and hybrid vehicles. The department also has high profile faculty who have
joined from the Automotive and Aerospace industry with an average of greater
than 25 years of experience. The department very soon is working to offer a Master’s
degree in Aerospace engineering.
Sufficient class rooms and systems are provided for students
use. The department also boasts of PACE – a one of its kind partnership that
General Motors has with a few selected institutes in south east Asia. The
department also hosts the Auto and Aero clubs and has a very active SAE
students chapter. The students have won accolades by participating in national
and international events.
The department has innumerable books to cater to the
students, faculty and research. The department also has on-line access to most
of all international journals. The faculty have authored scholarly papers in
leading journals, are key note speakers in international conferences and
organize international conferences and symposia. The department also has a wind
and a water tunnel facility along with all the mechanical labs, workshops and
related infra structure to be used by the faculty and students.
In addition the department offers specific training to
industry, students and faculty on a timely basis.
In all, the department offers the best environment for
Master’s and Ph.D students to pursue research in the field of their interest in
Automotive and Aerospace engineering and research. Main fields of activity are
in computational mechanics (CAE and CFD including computational bio-mechanics),
automotive and aero space design and engineering, electric and hybrid vehicles,
alternate materials and concepts, sensors and embedded systems, infotonics to
name a few.
The Department of Mechanical Engineering of PESIT is one of
the oldest departments of the institution and was started in the year 1988. The
Department has an annual intake of 180 students presently, with alumni strength
of over 3000 students, who can be found in the top notch companies and universities
across the world.
The Department has total faculty strength of 30 inclusive of
10 Professors, 3 Associate Professors and 14 Assistant Professors and 3
Visiting Professors.
The Department is among the top three in terms of choice of
students in CET every year and has faculty with an average teaching experience
of 18.1 years. Some of the faculty members have teaching experience upto 50
years. Besides teaching the faculty of the department have an impeccable record
in research and consultancy. In the past 3 years the faculty of the Department
completed upto 2.33 crores worth of funded projects and presently projects
worth 41.23 lakhs are still in progress.
The Faculty have a rich record of publishing articles in
National and International Journals and have published more than 75 papers in
reputed peer reviewed International Journals and more than 100 papers in
National & International Conferences over the past five years.
The Department has state-of-the-art infrastructure which
include facilities such as Subsonic Wind Tunnel, Water Tunnel, 200 ton
Hydraulic Press, High Velocity Oxy-fuel Spraying Equipment, Grid Blasting
Machine, Slurry Test Machine, Air Jet Erosion Machine, Salt Spray Tester,
Pin-on-disc Scratch Test Machine, Vicker’s Micro-Hardness Tester, Rapid
Prototyping Machine, 100 ton UTM and many others. It is also home to the PACE
(Partners for Advancement of Collaborative Engineering Education) lab which is
an initiative of General Motors Inc., USA, from the past 6 years.
The Department has unique student project initiatives such as
Team HAYA (Formula Racing Team), Team AEOLUS (aero modeling team) and Team
SAMKARAN (hybrid car team). The student teams have participated in National and
International competitions as part of these teams and won numerous prizes.
