BIOTECHNOLOGY

Biotechnology is the culmination of Life Sciences and Engineering resulting in technologies. These are exciting times for Biotechnology as it is considered the area that can solve sustainability issues for the human mankind. One can look for alternative renewable energy sources or mitigate climate change or produce medicines or discover new drugs or treatment technologies for health or tackle the requirements of meeting the hunger of billions of people or treat water and waste water or occupational health, etc., the answer lies in Biotechnology.

The Bachelors program in Biotechnology at PES University is a four year undergraduate degree course covering the span of Bioprocess Engineering, Cell and Molecular Biotechnology, Bioinformatics and Computational Biology and Medical and Environmental Biotechnology to address the sustainable issues which the human mankind has never dealt before.

The Bachelors of Engineering (B.E) in Biotechnology involves the application of engineering principles to biology and is more of an applied approach to Life Sciences laying the foundation by studying both hands on as well as formal teaching in basics of Biotechnology. It differs from the BSc and MSc Biotechnology which focuses more on the basic sciences and no focus on engineering aspects of biology. A student entering into the B.E Biotechnology program is introduced to subjects related to Biology such as Microbiology, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, in addition to engineering courses such as Bioprocess Calculations, Fluid Mechanics, Heat and Mass Transfer, Bioprocess Reaction Engineering and also Bioinformatics.

As the student approaches the intermediate level he or she would gear towards one of the specialized areas. Further, the student is trained hands on experience in the laboratories so as to gain knowledge of both the wet lab as well as dry lab. The program offers a choice of core courses in Biotechnology apart from a host of elective subjects in the respective domains. As part of the curriculum a student of Biotechnology is expected to complete a project of interest in their respective specialized area as a partial fulfilment of the B.E Biotechnology program. This gives the student an opportunity to excel either independently or as part of a team in conduction and execution of the project.

The students and faculty are encouraged to attend and publish in conferences, workshops and seminars, take part in competitions related to civil engineering, set up various chapter/clubs to carry out research/activities of their interest, like IGBC, ICI, Saṃniveśa etc. Student Academic Support Program is conducted after the class hours for the benefit of slow learning students in all the subjects. Guest lectures, invited lectures from the academic and industry experts are arranged to keep the students and faculty informed of the latest developments and industry challenges. The department would also like to organize national and international conferences, seminars and symposia in future.

The department plans to offer M.Tech and Ph.D programs, setup centers of excellence in structural engineering, advanced materials, geotechnical and transportation engineering, take up consultancy involving planning and design of real life projects and offer specific training to students and industry, on a timely and need basis.

In all, the department aims to offer the best environment for under graduate engineering students to pursue academic studies, research/activities in the field of their interest.

The Department of Civil Engineering at PESIT is one of the new department of the institution with an annual intake of 120 students. The Department currently has total faculty strength of 13 inclusive of 2 Professors, 1 Associate Professor and 7 Assistant Professors and 3 Visiting Professors.

COMPUTER SCIENCE

The B.E. in Computer Science and Engineering programme is designed to create globally competent manpower for the information and communication technology (ICT) industry. At the same time, it is also designed to prepare the student for post graduate education in the best universities across the globe. These twin objectives are accomplished by including an optimal mix of fundamental theory subjects and practical, current and industry relevant subjects in the scheme of study.

Other courses such as database management systems, for instance, provide the student a good mix of theoretical and practical aspects of the particular technology. Such courses have theory and laboratory components that are well integrated throughout the semester. In addition, students choose from a wide array of elective courses in higher semesters to further their competence in their chosen area of specialization such as advanced computer architecture, computer networking, mobile communication, sensor networks and artificial intelligence.

These courses are revised frequently and include current topics such as Web 2.0, data analytics, cloud computing, mobile systems engineering, Web technologies and so on. In addition to the regular curriculum, the students get an opportunity to work as teaching and research assistants under the faculty members who are constantly involved in sponsored research and consulting projects. The scheme also encourages and provides students opportunities to obtain summer internships in reputed companies to make them industry ready.

THE IMPORTANCE OF PURSUING MASTER’S PROGRAM IN POWER ELECTRONICS.

Energy is the life-blood for continual progress of human civilization. Energy processing equipment or power electronic equipment is a key element in the conversion of billions of kilowatts of electrical energy especially in the field of adjustable speed drives and renewable energy systems, contributing to remarkable energy saving and environmental pollution control in a broader perspective.
Power electronics technology has seen rapid progress in the past five decades, including power semi conductor devices, converters, drives, green surface and aerospace transport systems and renewable energy systems.

Power electronics is interdisciplinary in nature and used in a wide variety of industries from computers to chemical plants to rolling mills.

The importance of power electronics has grown tremendously over the years. Smart power devices are expected to become ubiquitous and revolutionize the way power is handled. In order to offer better quality of power, lot of research is on in areas such as power factor
correction and harmonic compensation.

Power electronics has now been established as a major discipline in electrical engineering and is gradually tending to emerge as a high tech frontier technology with power engineering. In the 21st century, it is expected that there will be a tremendous impact of power electronics not only in global industrialization and efficient energy systems, but also in energy conservation, renewable energy systems and electric or hybrid vehicles. The role of power electronics will be as important and versatile as computer and information technology today.
It is quite apparent that power electronics is emerging as the most preferred area of specialization and therefore quite worthwhile pursuing a master’s degree in power electronics.
